Why this project needed our help
Ichar is a remote village in the Zanskar area of Ladakh in the Western Himalayas. The Government School in Ichar caters for 60 students, aged 4 to 15, from the village and nearby settlements. It closes each winter due to extreme cold. In 2010 the school was badly damaged by flood water, and restoration of buildings, bridges and tracks proved very problematic due to the remoteness of the area.
How Juniper Trust helped
In 2010 Juniper Trust donated £1000 for the purchase and delivery of 84 sturdy pairs of shoes, essential stationary and other educational supplies. A further £1000 was donated in 2012 to replenish supplies and toiletries. 30 mattresses were purchased for summer boarders in 2013 and £500 was donated in 2014 for books to establish a small library. A further £2000 was raised in 2015 to help repair the school following the spring floods.
What difference has been made?
The books have proved hugely advantageous for both students and teachers, and the financial support has been such a help that no further donations are required at the moment.
