Why this project needed our help
The Juniper Trust has helped install individual solar lights in over 4000 households in the several villages in the remote Huayhuash and Cordillera Blanca regions of northern Peru. Val Pitkethly, an adventure trek leader in the area, became aware of the need to provide lighting for those villages without electricity and approached JT for help.
How Juniper Trust helped
The portable lights mean that villagers can have light in their homes, enabling them to help anyone who is ill during the night, tend to sick cattle and help their children with school studies in the evening. Using LED bulbs, they are also very efficient and draw a fraction of the charge of ordinary incandescent lights.
What difference has been made?
The village committees are responsible for raising the necessary funds to pay for replacement batteries, which they can do. The lights have been a huge success in the villages, especially amongst the children, who now can study in better light.
