Why this project needed our help?

Udayan is a home that provides rehabilitation services to just over 300 boys and girls affected by leprosy. The home offers medical care, education, and vocational training with the goal of enabling the children to not only support themselves but also their extended families, who are frequently among India’s poorest.

The Juniper Trust contributed £1,000 to a project aimed at raising the home’s existing 150ft x 130ft “kitchen garden” by 3ft and providing it with proper drainage and a pump. The entire area was once paddy land, but during the monsoon, it becomes waterlogged, resulting in a limited yield. The goal was to make it possible for the home’s kitchen to have a year-round supply of vegetables, which would provide important health benefits.

The fresh vegetable diet had a significant positive impact on the children’s health. Additionally, at least 50 children received agriculture training every year, which proved to be an invaluable vocational skill. This skill not only enabled the children to grow vegetables but also had therapeutic benefits for many of them who had experienced significant trauma.
