Why this project needed our help?

Founded in 2011, Karama Kids currently houses, cares for and supports 17 children and young adults, providing them with a family life, quality education, and essential medical care. Originally set up to provide a home for children with HIV, over time, it has become a refuge for the most vulnerable children in society. A team of UK and US volunteers dedicate their time to raising funds, gathering resources and volunteering at the home to improve facilities, secure funding, and create a brighter future for young people with limited opportunities.

The Juniper Trust has supported Hayley and her fundraising efforts, which have included walking the Coast to Coast in the UK, climbing Mt. Kilimanjaro and Mt. Meru, hiking the Inca Trail to Machu Picchu, and various volcanoes in Nicaragua. The funds raised help pay for medicine, clinic and hospital expenses, medical supplies, transportation to and from appointments, as well as providing furniture, clothing, and assistance with day-to-day running costs. In early 2021, Hayley went to Tanzania to volunteer at Karama for three months and met the newest addition to the family, Regan, who is eight years old and has spent a lot of time in the hospital for surgery on his leg and ongoing problems with his ears. Despite this, he has adapted well to life at Karama. In July, with the support of The Juniper Trust, Hayley hiked Nicaragua’s fifth-highest volcano to raise money for Regan’s medical procedures.

Hayley is delighted to report that all the children are healthy and doing well. One student, Cecelia, has started attending the Institute of Finance Management in Dar es Salaam to pursue a degree in Accountancy, bringing the total number of girls from Karama attending university to four. For over six years, Karama has been searching for the mother of one of the boys, Dickson, who is 13 years old. In July of this year, they succeeded in finding her, which is wonderful news for him. In other good news, the vaccine program has begun in Tanzania, and some of the older children have already received their first vaccine, with no significant side-effects reported.

In March 2022, Hayley successfully completed a fundraiser for Karama Kids by hiking Mt Hanang, Tanzania’s third-highest mountain. She raised £700, which will be used to cover medical expenses for Karama Kids’ newest and youngest boy.
